Redox OS, MINIX, Hurd & Genode Had Their Time At FOSDEM Too

While Linux is the most prominent operating system each year at the Free Open-Source Developers' European Meeting (FOSDEM), it's not a conference limited to just Linux. Once again there was a developer room dedicated to other operating systems like the Rust-written Redox OS.

The "Microkernels and Component-based OS" track was dedicated to interesting work going on for Genode OS, Redox OS, and even some MINIX and GNU Hurd too.

It's always interesting to hear about the novel research work being done by Genode OS, hearing about virtualization for GNU Hurd was also a surprise, and then of these "other OSes", Redox OS has been getting a fair amount of attention the past year for being written in the Rust programming language. Redox remains a "safety-first" micro-kernel and they are pursuing use-cases for IoT devices (Internet of Things), security / trusted computing, and other possibilities for this open-source operating system written from scratch.
