Fedora Workstation 26 will be receiving official AC3 codec support.

Red Hat's Christian Schaller wrote today on his blog that AC3 is being added to Fedora 26, the codec most known as Dolby Surround. AC3/A52 is commonly used by many video files for the audio format, so it's great to see this support coming.

Fedora 26 will have AC3 playback support and they are currently exploring AC3 encoder support too, for that currently exploring possibly pulling it from FFmpeg/Libav or the currently-stale Aften project.

As confirmed by Red Hat's Tom Callaway, this AC3 inclusion appears to be happening over the last of the AC3 patents expiring. More details on the AC3 patent expiration, which happened just on 20 March, can be found at AC3FreedomDay.org.
