Fedora Stakeholders Discuss Moving Away From Grubby

It doesn't look like this proposal will end up panning out, but Fedora stakeholders are discussing the prospects of dropping Grubby in favor of just using grub2-mkconfig.

Grubby is the tool that Fedora has been using for updating and display information about boot-loader configurations. Contrary to the name, Grubby not only supports handling GRUB but also other boot-loaders like LILO, Yaboot, ELILO, and Zipl. Those unfamiliar with Grubby can see its GitHub page.

Andrew Lutomirski initiated the discussion about switching from Grubby to grub2-mkconfig. "Specifically, these days grub2-mkconfig appears to produce output that's functionally identical to what grubby generates. Can we switch new-kernel-pkg to just regenerate the grub2 config using grub2-mkconfig instead of using grubby? Debian has worked like this forever, and IMO it's superior in pretty much all respects. There are already nice config hooks for making custom changes, and they're a lot more reliable than trusting grubby to do what you expect it to do."

However, many are against this since currently Fedora still has to support more boot-loaders than just GRUB2, among other reservations as outlined by the aforelinked mailing list thread.
