GNU Guix 0.8.3 Brings 179 New Packages, New Commands

GNU Guix, the functional package manager designed for the GNU system and GuixSD distribution, is out with a new release that has more than 800 commits over the past two months.

First up, with Guix 0.8.3 are 179 new packages and updates to 181 existing packages. Among the new packages are many Python 2 packages, numerous GNOME components like Rhythmbox and the Adwaita icon theme, some Ruby packages, and an assortment of other packages. The updated packages are equally varied.

New functionality within the GNU Guix 0.8.3 package manager are edit and size sub-commands, Emacs support improvements, basic man pages have been added, and the Guix daemon now requires a C++11 compiler. When it comes to the Guix distribution, the default compiler is now GCC 4.9.3 and the ARMv7 port now requires the NEON instruction set extensions.
