Gallium3D Support For ASTC Compression Is Being Worked On
A few months back Intel enabled ASTC texture compression support in their open-source drivers while Mesa's Gallium3D drivers have yet to see such treatment.
ASTC is a royalty-free texture compression format backed by The Khronos Group. It's hoped that ASTC will eventually replace S3TC, which would be a win for open-source due to the patent situation around S3 Texture Compression.
As the latest open-source good news, Ilia Mirkin has been pushing some new ASTC-related patches for Gallium3D this weekend, including support for the Mesa state tracker. Of course, when the full ASTC support lands for the main Gallium3D hardware drivers in Mesa Git, you'll be able to read about it on Phoronix, granted Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression in hardware is limited to very recent GPUs.
