Kieran Kunhya with some documentation in hand and a lot of reverse engineering has been working on allowing support for the GoPro Cineform HD codec from the open-source Linux desktop.

Cineform HD is described by Kunhya as "a niche wavelet codec...It appears the main goal of using CFHD is to let people edit 4K files easily on underpowered hardware and/or systems with poorly performing proprietary H264 decoders." Since being acquired by GoPro, Cineform HD is the default output codec from GoPro Studio. Additionally, Adobe Premiere supports Cineform HD as an output option.

Paired with documentation obtained from the SMPTE as part of his day job and complemented by some reverse engineering, Kieran has been working on open-source Linux support for CFHD / CineForm HD. So far he's got the support working in FFmpeg's FFplayer and intends to publish the patches once tidying up the code.
