Intel's Open-Source Driver Stack Now OpenGL 4.5 Certified, Complements Vulkan & GLES

Intel's open-source Mesa DRI driver has passed The Khronos Group's process for certifying it as a conformant OpenGL 4.5 implementation. This now rounds out the Intel open-source Linux stack with OpenGL 4.5, OpenGL ES 3.2, and Vulkan 1.0 certification.

Intel's open-source Linux driver stack has managed the trifecta of certification from The Khronos Group for graphics: OpenGL 4.5, OpenGL ES 3.2, and Vulkan 1.0. This cannot be said for any other vendor with a completely open driver stack: AMD hasn't certified their open-source driver offerings, Nouveau hasn't yet reached GL/GLES certification though they are working on it with the X.Org Foundation acting as the entity behind it plus they don't yet have a Vulkan driver, and there isn't yet any other vendor with a fully-open driver stack covering multiple areas. Perhaps we'll see Freedreno and Raspberry Pi VC4 reach it one day. When it comes to proprietary drivers on Linux, NVIDIA has this certification too.

This milestone today is about formal OpenGL 4.5 certification from The Khronos Group where as previously they had exposed OpenGL 4.5 support in Mesa but they hadn't been through the formal process until ensuring the OpenGL Conformance Test Suite fully-passes. Unrelated, The Khronos Group recently open-sourced their conformance test suite.

Imad Sousou of the Intel Open-Source Technology Center announced this grand accomplishment today on 01.org. Splendid job to all those involved. Hopefully their next area of focus will be on OpenCL certification for Beignet, which recently hit OpenCL 2.0.
