KDE Plasma 5.7 continues to look more and more like it will be running reasonably well on Wayland with close parity to the KDE stack running on X11.

The latest Plasma-on-Wayland functionality being talked about is a new task manager library coming for the 5.7 release. This new task manager library for KDE Plasma supports Wayland rather than the old code-base that relied upon X11. There are already plans to make improvements to this code for Plasma 5.8, including more security work. Related work is also ongoing within the KDE Frameworks 5 stack.

Those wanting to learn more about this Plasma task-manager work can read this overview by Martin as well as this KDE.org blog post from last week covering the new Plasma Task Manager back-end. Besides Wayland support there is improved performance, improved behavior, lower memory usage, and a cleaner code-base.
