Linux 3.19-rc4 Kernel Released
Linus Torvalds is back on schedule doing Sunday releases of the in-development Linux 3.19 kernel.
In announcing the Linux 3.19-rc4 kernel a few minutes ago, Torvalds described the changes in the past week as "reasonably calm" although some last minute memory management regressions were noted. There wasn't too much since Monday to get excited over in the stable kernel activity with many developers already readying their work for the Linux 3.20 kernel merge window that will open after the 3.19 debut.
Torvalds will be traveling the next two weeks for Linux.Conf.Au, which is taking place this year 12 to 16 January in Auckland, New Zealand, but it's not believed that it will interfere with the Linux 3.19 development schedule -- especially if the development churn remains calm.
Linux 3.19 packs a lot of great changes and improvements as outlined in the 3.19 feature overview. I've already been benchmarking Linux 3.19 Git in some articles on Phoronix while more performance tests are on the way with this first big kernel update of 2015.
Expect Linux 3.19 to be officially released in February. As of right now, Linux 3.19 is still codenamed the Diseased Newt, the original name of Linux 3.18.
