Linus Torvalds issued on Sunday night the eighth weekly test version of the Linux 4.8 kernel with the expectation of officially releasing this new kernel next weekend.

Usually the kernel only goes through about seven release candidates before going gold, but with activity ticking up towards the end of the cycle, Torvalds found it best to issue an RC8. That's now available and next weekend is then the Linux 4.8.0 debut unless something terrible happens.

The very brief Linux 4.8-rc8 release announcement can be read on the kernel mailing list.

Features of Linux 4.8 are covered by our feature overview. We have already done many benchmarks using Linux 4.8 Git in various Phoronix articles while on LinuxBenhcmarking.com continue to be daily Linux Git benchmarks on Fedora and Ubuntu using a variety of systems.
