Linux Foundation's CII Donates $50k+ To OpenBSD

The Linux Foundation's Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII) has made a donation in the range of $50~100k USD to the OpenBSD project.

The LF CII was announced last year following the massive fallout from the OpenSSL heartbleed bug. The initiative is aimed at, "With our Core Infrastructure Initiative, we're taking a collaborative, pre-emptive approach for strengthening cyber security. Many industry giants signed on to harden the security of key open source projects."

While it may seem odd at first glance that the Linux Foundation is giving money to OpenBSD, it's OpenBSD that's stewarding LibreSSL as an alternative to OpenSSL, OpenSSH, and related projects.

The Linux Foundation CII has become OpenBSD's first "platinum" level sponsor, which means the group contributed between $50,000 and $100,000 (USD) to OpenBSD. Confirmation of this donation was posted to the OpenBSD Journal.

This news comes just one month after Microsoft donated $10k+ to OpenBSD in support of OpenSSH.
