An interesting project that Collabora has been working on lately, which they are now ready to show off, is Witivi. This is a non-linear video editor that was written in HTML5 and works with the WebKit rendering engine.

Mateu Batle at Collabora has been doing this interesting real-time video editor that takes advantage of the video support in the HTML5 specification. It's working in a WebKit-based browser.

In order for the editor to work, however, he did have to make a few hacks in WebKit to extend it to cover areas where HTML5/JavaScript wouldn't otherwise be capable of handling per the current specifications. Mateu mentions though that upcoming work like WebRTC, WebAudio, and the MediaStream APIs that have been proposed by various organizations as new web standards would help address the current shortcomings.

The current WebKit extension is implemented using the GStreamer Editing Services (GES) module. Making this video editor possible is also jQuery.
