The PureDarwin operating system project is out with a new release. PureDarwin attempts to make Apple's Darwin open-source base operating system for Mac OS X more usable to users.

There hasn't been much to report on recently for PureDarwin, the informal successor to the earlier OpenDarwin project. Released last weekend though was PureDarwin 1.3 Beta.

There's still a lot of rough areas to this open-source operating system building around Apple's Darwin base, but they're moving in the right direction. There's many components not yet working or implemented so for now PureDarwin is still very experimental and really just intended for diehard enthusiasts who wish to tinker with Darwin. For those wanting to toy around with this operating system over the holidays, the PureDarwin 1.3 Beta can be launched within VirtualBox or KVM virtualization.
