After Valve announced SteamOS on Monday as their highly-optimized Linux distribution for gaming, today they announced the first "Steam Machine", a.k.a. their SteamOS-powered console for the living room.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to faithful Phoronix readers, but the limited details that were publicly announced today can be found via the new SteamMachines page.

Valve will ship their first Steam Machine in early 2014 while before year's end they will ship 300 beta units to selected participants.

In terms of the SteamMachines details for the first device, the company noted, "We'll tell you more about it soon. Remember, there will ultimately be several boxes to choose from, with an array of specifications, price, and performance."

A final SteamOS-related countdown expires on Friday... Perhaps their portable/mobile plan or their input/wearable device(s)?
