The first alpha release of Mageia 4, the distribution derived from Mandriva Linux, is now available. There isn't too much to see out of Mageia 4 Alpha 1 over the Mageia 3 stable release at this time, but there's a whole list of features being planned.

The brief Mageia 4 Alpha 1 release announcement can be read on the Mageia blog. There isn't too much to get excited about for users with this release as most of the work is still to be integrated and developed while living in the repositories for now are a lot of experimental packages.

On the Mageia Wiki are a list of accepted features for Mageia 4. Among the features are packaging the Cinnamon and Mate desktop environments, a rewritten mgarepo utility with Git support, Media Transport Protocol (MTP) support, NetworkDrakTools improvements, support for writing Mageia ISOs to USB sticks, systemd integration improvements, and support for systemd within the initial RAM disk.
