Besides FreeBSD 10.0 Beta 4 being out, so is the latest update to the FreeBSD-derived PC-BSD operating system. Besides being based off the FreeBSD 10.0 packages and features, interesting about this PC-BSD update is the GNOME 2 desktop has finally been replaced by GNOME 3, MATE, and Cinnamon desktop alternatives.

PC-BSD ships with the KDE desktop by default, but with GNOME 2 not having been maintained for years, they're finally retiring the packages in the PC-BSD world. New alternatives include GNOME 3 itself on BSD, the MATE GNOME 2 fork, or the GNOME 3 Cinnamon fork by the Linux Mint crew.

Other updates to the latest PC-BSD 10-STABLE image include an updated installer options for the text mode, improved PBIs support, updated the Linux compatibility layer to CentOS 6, and there's numerous bug-fixes.

More details on the PC-BSD 10 updates for the desktop friendly FreeBSD operating system can be found via the PCBSD.org blog.
