The VDPAU API has been extended to accommodate H.264's Hi444PP profile.

Karthikeyan Sreenivasan of NVIDIA has extended their VDPAU (Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) interface to now support the High 444 Predictive Profile (Hi444PP) of H.264. Right now of Hi444PP only the 8-bit depth support is in place while other profiles/levels will be added in the future, per this Git commit.

The H.264 Hi444PP profile supports up to 4:4:4 chroma sampling and supports efficient losless coding and the coding of each picture as three separate color planes.
