SquashFS In Linux 3.19 Adds LZ4 Compression Support

Within the in-development Linux 3.19 kernel is now support for LZ4 compression for SquashFS, the read-only file-system commonly used by various Linux distribution live CDs.

SquashFS originally compressed its data with Gzip but for a few years now has supported LZMA and LZO. With Linux 3.19, LZ4 is added to the list. Optional LZ4 compression support is added to SquashFS for Linux 3.19. LZ4 is a lightweight compression algorithm and its implementation is intended for embedded systems with reduced CPU usage and lower memory overhead in comparison to Zlib.

LZ4 for SquashFS is the only major change for the read-only file-system of Linux 3.19. The pull request by Phillip Lougher was just sent in a few minutes ago to the Linux kernel mailing list.
