FreeRDS Talked Up For X & Wayland

The FreeRDS project was talked about at this past week's XDC2014 conference in Bordeaux, France. FreeRDS is an open-source RDP server derived from FreeRDP.

RDP is the proprietary Remote Desktop Protocol developed by Microsoft for offering its GUI broadcast over a network connection. David Fort was talking about his work on FreeRDS at XDC2014 and how FreeRDS interacts with X11 and Wayland.

There's been some FreeRDS code on GitHub but it hasn't seen any changes since October of 2013, but in the presentation David says that the code will be fully published soon. The design of FreeRDS is based on FreeRDP but also inspired by Xrdp. FreeRDS offers a full host of security options, encoding support, external channel handling, session reconnection, session shadowing, etc. For now FreeRDS is only concerned about Linux support.

Beyond the X.Org Server support, as covered before on Phoronix, FreeRDS also has Wayland/Weston support.
