Yesterday I shared my preview of RunAbove's PowerPC cloud using IBM's latest POWER8 CPUs. RunAbove's PowerPC cloud currently offers an instance type up to 176 threads, for which I've spent the past few days of benchmarking. While initially the only operating system enabled in the POWER8 cloud was Fedora 19, now Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is also an option.

As of yesterday, Ubuntu 14.04 instances can be deployed within RunAbove's POWER8 cloud for their S and 2XL instance types in both their American and French data centers.

I'm still in the process of getting more benchmarks running on 64-bit PowerPC and working through some other test scenarios, but if you're curious about Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on PowerPC with POWER8 cloud computing, I have some preview benchmarks this weekend.

Ubuntu 14.04 out-of-the-box on the RunAbove Power8 cloud was using the Linux 3.13.0-37-generic ppc64le kernel and GCC 4.8.2. Via 1410249-LI-POWER8EUB43 on OpenBenchmarking.org you can view a bunch of CPU benchmarks I ran yesterday with the RunAbove 2XL instance.

If you wish to see how your own x86/ARM/PowerPC/SPARC Linux systems compare to this POWER8 compute instance, simply install the Phoronix Test Suite and then with our open-source, automated benchmarking software just run phoronix-test-suite benchmark 1410249-LI-POWER8EUB43. It's that easy with most all popular Linux distributions.
