An Intel-Based Ubuntu Touch Tablet Is Planning To Launch Soon

Today we've received some information a device dubbed the "UT One" that is an Ubuntu Touch tablet powered by an Intel Bay Trail processor and aims to ship in December.

According to the information we've been supplied, the UT One is going to launch in late November for pre-ordering with hopes of shipping by late December. The Ubuntu Touch tablet is based around an Intel Atom Z3735D "Bay Trail" SoC that's quad-core with 1.33GHz base frequency and 1.5GHz turbo frequency. The Intel Z3735D features Intel HD "Gen7" graphics like the other Bay Trail (formerly "Valley View") designs.

Besides the quad-core Atom SoC, UT One is slated to ship with 2GB of DDR3L system memory and 16GB of flash-based storage, 10-point capacitive screen, 7900mAh battery for up to eight hours of battery life, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 2MP front camera + 2MP rear camera, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and 1.4lb weight. One of the sore points though to the tablet is that its 10.1-inch LCD display runs at a resolution of just 1280 x 800, which isn't much by today's consumer tablets having HD resolutions and greater.

Presumably the UT One will be running the 14.10 release of Ubuntu Touch. Unfortunately I don't have any other details on the device at this time. I also don't have any pricing information on the UT One.

I was just forwarded information this morning on the UT One tablet in a very short email. The information comes from Andrew Bernstein, the one that previously launched Operating System U as an Arch-based Wayland with MATE consumer distribution that ultimately ceased to exist after a failed Kickstarter campaign.

The UT One spec sheet is marked as by Demski Group and Mastermind Hardware and Logistics. Demski Group also appears to be working on MAGE, a way to create "mobile applications without knowing any programming!" That are "feature-packed goergeous applications within minutes." MAGE though doesn't seem to target Ubuntu Touch but only the other dominant mobile platforms. The Mastermind Hardware and Logistics seems to point to MasterMindTec.com but is a domain only registered earlier this month and isn't yet home to anything. It's also worth noting that Andrew Bernstein's LinkedIn page now points to working at The Demski Group.

Given that the UT One is coming from a small organization, they're likely just sourcing a Chinese-made OEM tablet for this Ubuntu Touch device (there's many from the Chinese supply web-sites with similar specs to this UT One), but later in November we'll learn more about the slated offerings for the UT One and what they're seeking to accomplish and at what price point. It's also in December that Meizu hopes to start shipping their first Ubuntu phone.
