Kubuntu 15.04 Will Use KDE's Plasma 5 By Default
Kubuntu's Jonathan Riddell has shared that "Kubuntu Vivid", a.k.a. Ubuntu 15.05 for the Vivid Vervet, will use Plasma 5 by default.
With last week's release of Kubuntu 14.10, KDE 4.14 was still the default desktop environment while the Kubuntu crew has been pushing out KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 5 experimental packages along with special ISO spins of the next-generation KDE desktop. For Kubuntu 15.04 in April, the developers feel confident already in committing to using Plasma 5.
Riddell noted in a KDE blog post, "The exiting news is that following some discussion and some wavering we will be switching to Plasma 5 by default. It has shown itself as a solid and reliable platform and it's time to show it off to the world."
Quickly adopting KDE Plasma 5 / KF5 work should also help out upstream Debian packaging. Right now there's much polishing and improvements to be done for the next-gen KDE stack but sounds like it should be cleaned up within the next six months.
