The Most Downloaded Benchmarks With The Phoronix Test Suite / OpenBenchmarking.org

With last week OpenBenchmarking.org crossing 22 million test/suite downloads I decided to dig in and see what have been the most popular test profiles downloaded from OpenBenchmarking.org for execution by the Phoronix Test Suite.

Here's a look at the top ten most downloaded tests by the Phoronix Test Suite going back to the PTS 3.0 release when OpenBenchmarking.org premiered in 2011:

CacheBench is actually the most downloaded test ever by the Phoronix Test Suite. CacheBench alone has been downloaded 1.7 million times; presumably since it's an easy-to-run, quick test that can run on all supported platforms.

C-Ray takes the second place spot. C-Ray remains one of our favorite multi-threaded benchmarks for CPU reviews. C-Ray is great for a multi-threaded workload to keep the processor busy and builds well and runs on all supported platforms.

Compress-Gzip took third as the most-downloaded, to some surprise. But hey it's a simple test, runs everywhere, and lots of people are still concerned about Gzip performance that haven't moved onto newer compression standards.

Java-SciMark2 was another surprise, but hey, a large number of enterprises still depend upon Java.

Build-mplayer was the fifth most downloaded test profile to date.

RAMspeed remains one of the easiest and straight-forward ways to measure the system RAM performance on Linux.

Dbench meanwhile is popular as a easy and straight-forward disk test.

Timed PHP compilation was the next most popular test, to little surprise given how many individuals and organizations are concerned about testing compiler performance, have PHP running inside their environments, etc.

Encode-MP3 as a test of LAME remains a long-standing test and one of the original to the Phoronix Test Suite. This LAME MP3 encoding test also works well for measuring single-threaded performance of the system.

Bork is another Java test.

Well, those are the ten most downloaded test profiles from OpenBenchmarking.org since its launch six years ago for Phoronix Test Suite 3.0. It may surprise some Phoronix readers that no graphics/gaming tests are in the top ten list, but in reality, it's not much of a surprise considering the majority of those benchmarking their (mostly Linux) systems are doing so in a professional/enterprise environment rather than being just a hobbyist or gamer.
