Initial NVIDIA GP102 Support In Nouveau DRM
Ben Skeggs of Red Hat has added initial support for the GP102 Pascal GPU to the Nouveau DRM driver.
With a commit last night to the Nouveau kernel development repository there was initial support for the GP102, "From visual inspection of traces, what we currently implement appears to be identical to GP104. Seems to work well enough too."
The GP102 is at the heart of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX TITAN X Pascal edition. But before getting too excited, NVIDIA has yet to release the signed firmware images for allowing hardware acceleration on the consumer Pascal cards. Additionally, it's really nonsensical even if there was working 3D to use this open-source driver on a $1,000+ USD graphics card when there isn't any re-clocking support for Pascal (or Maxwell) in Nouveau so the performance would be horrific. But at least it's good enough for mode-setting to get a display working before installing the proprietary driver for the full performance and feature-set.
This support should make it into Linux 4.10 and make things more exciting to complement the good Kepler boost support, the Nouveau LED driver, atomic mode-setting, DP MST, and more. Nouveau's getting a big update for Linux 4.10.
