The latest non-rolling release of openSUSE is version 13.2, but openSUSE 42 is the next version now under development.

OpenSUSE 42 is the working name for the next version of this SUSE-sponsored Linux operating system -- they're calling it "42" after the project name on their Open Build Service. However, prior to the actual release, it looks like they'll work out a proper version number for the release that makes sense. Those organizing this next release are hoping for openSUSE 42 to be released by early November.

With future releases of the new openSUSE, they now expect to align them with releases of SUSE Linux Enterprise service packs and major releases. OpenSUSE 42 is expected to be a "long-term support" type release by the community and SUSE.

More details are expected soon while the initial announcement from this morning can be read at news.opensuse.org.
