NVIDIA Rolls Out Tegra X2 GPU Support In Nouveau
NVIDIA has published the initial hardware enablement patches for bringing up the Pascal GPU found in the Tegra X2 SoC under the open-source Nouveau driver.
This doesn't come, however, as a huge surprise. NVIDIA has supported the GP100 on Nouveau for some time and at the beginning of March provided Nouveau accelerated support for the consumer GeForce GTX 1000 Pascal cards as well as the needed NVIDIA signed firmware support. NVIDIA also has a history now of contributing the open-source graphics support to Nouveau for Tegra GPUs. They have Tegra customers interested in using the open-source driver stack and also why they've supported it for Tegra on Wayland, etc.
It was just two weeks back that NVIDIA launched the Jetson TX2 with the new Tegra SoC and now they have published the GP10B support patches. GP10B is the codename for the GPU found in the Tegra X2 / Jetson TX2.
There are 15 patches needed for bringing up the GP10B on Nouveau and it's not a big code churn over the existing Pascal GPU support. With that said, hopefully we'll still be able to see this GP10B Nouveau support land in the upcoming Linux 4.12 merge window. NVIDIA is also working on mainlining their other Jetson TX2 board changes in the Linux kernel.
