Ubuntu 15.04 Released, Now Available For Download
Ubuntu 15.04, the Vivid Vervet, is the six-month update to Ubuntu Linux. The big focus for Canonical during development of Ubuntu 15.04 remains on the mobile/phone side and improving their convergence experience, which for desktop users will not fully pan out until Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in one year time. However, for desktop users of Ubuntu, today's release is quite modest and does deliver some new features.
Ubuntu 15.04 is powered by the Linux 3.19 kernel, Mesa 10.5, X.Org Server 1.17, GCC 4.9, and this is the release that switched over to systemd. Systemd is now powering Ubuntu 15.04 and future releases rather than Upstart. The kernel and other low-level upgrades can mean better performance and new features thanks to upstream work.
Ubuntu 15.04 on the desktop is shipping a slightly-updated Unity 7 + Compiz by default while Kubuntu 15.04 brings the new KDE Plasma 5 desktop experience.
On the server/cloud front there's the introduction of LXD containers, the new OpenStack, and other virtualization improvements, but nothing that is too jaw-dropping.
