UBUNTU
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is shipping right now with the Linux 4.4 kernel while for the Ubuntu 16.10 release in October they are expected to jump ahead to Linux 4.8.

With being an LTS+1 release, they are more liberal in their packages for this release that's codenamed Yakkety Yak. Linux 4.7 should land in July and Linux 4.8 should be officially released around the end of September, if all goes well and the release candidates don't drag on for Linux 4.7 or 4.8.

The kernel freeze for Ubuntu Yakkety Yak is 29 September while the official release is expected on 13 October. This week's Ubuntu Kernel Team meeting confirmed they are still planning for Linux 4.8.

From the kernel perspective, Ubuntu 16.10 should be great if 4.8 indeed happens. Hopefully we'll also be able to see Mesa 12.0+1 make it into this release too for providing great out-of-the-box graphics support with that next release being due likely some time in September where we may finally see OpenGL 4.5 out of the open-source Linux graphics drivers.
