Ubuntu Will Start Booting With Systemd Next Monday
Ubuntu developers are planning to make Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Verbet) boot with systemd instead of Upstart beginning next Monday, 9 March. This affects Ubuntu on desktops and servers and all flavors of Ubuntu like Kubuntu and Xubuntu.
The only exception for now to those migrating to systemd is Ubuntu Touch, which is currently sticking with Upstart due to many Ubuntu Touch devices being stuck to the Linux 3.4 kernel for now due to their CyanogenMod/Android base. Not until all Ubuntu Touch platforms can switch to a modern version of the Linux kernel will they be able to enable systemd for booting these smartphones and tablets.
Martin Pitt posted confirmation of the Ubuntu systemd switching plans to ubuntu-devel-announce. Should there be much fallout from the systemd-booted Ubuntu, Martin wrote, "if after some weeks we find that there are too many or too big regressions, we can revert to upstart by default with two simple uploads (ubuntu-standard and init)."
