Unity Stats Show Linux Gamers Are Well Below 1% Of Their Customer Base
Each month we look at the estimated Linux gaming marketshare based upon Valve's Steam Survey. Generally the reported Linux market-share on Steam is hovering around 1%, which a number of Linux enthusiasts claim is inaccurate and under-represented. Well, Unity's survey information is much the same and pegs the percentage of Linux users running games based upon Unity as much lower than 1%.
The Unity game engine does maintain their own standalone hardware stats based upon the information they automatically collect -- it's not a random opt-in survey like with Steam. With Unity's aggregated information for this month (March 2016), the Linux data tallies up to less than a half percent. It's 0.3% listed, but due to rounding a number of the other Linux identifiers just show up as 0.0%, so depending upon how it's rounded, I'll just call it less than a half percent but that still could end up being too generous.
Their other OS data shows Windows 8 at 0.7%, Windows 7 at 65.9%, Windows XP at 17.3%, Windows 10 at 8%, and Windows 8.1 at 4.6%. OS X El Capitan and Yosemite together amount to 2%.
Of the detected Linux distributions, Ubuntu is the most popular followed by Mint Linux and SteamOS.
