Wayland Protocol Extensions Are Being Talked About A Lot This Week
If you are looking for some Wayland drama, check out the most commented on mailing list thread this week: collaboration on standard Wayland protocol extensions.
Drew DeVault who has been developing the Sway Wayland compositor as a drop-in replacement to X11's i3 window manager, started this mailing list thread in trying to foster more collaboration over Wayland protocol extensions between the different desktop environments / compositors.
There's already been a lot of collaboration between the different Linux desktop environments aiming to support Wayland, which has been going on for years. Drew DeVault was specifically trying to start some collaboration over screen capturing, output configuration, more detailed surface roles, and input device configuration.
While it started out with nice intentions, the thread has exploded since then with arguments over Wayland Security, whether screen capturing should be compositor-specific in the name of security, and similar arguments. It's not clear how much good this thread will ultimately have on advancing Wayland, but if you have some extra time today and are interested in this successor to X.Org, you can check out the thread.
