X Rebirth Linux Alpha Now Available
Not to be confused with the X (X11/X.Org) Server, Egosoft's X Rebirth is now publicly available in alpha form for Linux gamers.
The X Series of games have been on Linux for many years and back in the day were ported to Linux by LGP with X2: The Threat and X3: Reunion. Egosoft now does their Linux work in-house and they're out with the first public alpha builds of X Rebirth.
X Rebirth is a single-player space trading and combat game that's the sixth installment of this game series. X Rebirth was released for Windows in late 2013 on Steam. Per this forum thread, Linux gamers can begin participating in alpha testing the port.
With the alpha announcement already comes with a warning about recommending the proprietary graphics drivers for AMD and NVIDIA Linux gamers. If you opt for using the open-source drivers, make sure you have S3TC support installed. There's also a host of known issues and missing features with the current build. Those wanting to learn more about this game can do so at Egosoft.com.
