It Looks Like X.Org Might Be Safe For A Few More Years
As a follow-up to last week's X.Org Might Lose Its Domain Name, where it looked like the X.Org Foundation would lose their single-letter domain unless getting very lucky, they managed to get their domain renewed today. The X.Org Foundation has yet to issue a statement, but perhaps thanks to all the public pressure the past few days had a helping hand in getting the domain situation sorted out in a timely manner.
The X.Org domain was renewed today and now lists its expiry date of 19 January 2025. The defunct X.Org Foundation LLC is still listed as the admin/registrant while the associated email still is with Leon Shiman, the former X.Org contributor who had a falling out with the organization some years back.
X.Org contributor Daniel Stone had provided some background information in the comments to the earlier article on the matter, "Given it's an issue that we've known about for 10 years now, you can assume we've tried all the obvious steps which would occur to anyone within about ten seconds' worth of thought. When it expired in 2007, it was renewed outside of the usual channels as it did construe unusual circumstances (the domain still existing is an extremely unusual circumstance - one-letter domains are not, as a matter of course, available). We have attempted to contact Leon via email, phone, snail mail and even physical contact, but he remains uncooperative, and without his assistance then we cannot modify the domain as he is the sole contact. Were it possible to do anything with the domain, then it would've been smoothly handled and transferred a long time ago. (Note 'we' is mixed tense, as I was involved in the same issue nine years ago, but am not heavily involved in the current attempts to renew.)"
Soon as I hear anything how the domain managed to get renewed this time, will post an update.
