Keith Packard took a break from his new job at Hewlett Packard working on Linux support for "The Machine" to put out the official release of X.Org Server 1.17.

X.Org Server 1.17.0 was released a few minutes ago and is codenamed Côte de veau. This is a half-year update to the X.Org Server and features integration of the xf86-video-modesetting DDX driver, much improved GLAMOR support, and other improvements.

Côte de veau succeeds X Server 1.16, Marionberry Pie.

Xorg-server 1.17 does bring an ABI bump that is already supported by NVIDIA's binary blob. AMD Catalyst has yet to be updated and as usual it's anyone's guess for when a 1.17 supported Catalyst Linux driver will be available... If the past turnaround time is any indication, it won't come until Fedora or Ubuntu is about to ship with xorg-server 1.17.

Going forward, X.Org Server 1.18 is expected to be a quick release cycle and will feature more GLAMOR/mode-setting changes. Packard's brief 1.17 announcement can be found on the mailing list.
