LINUX GAMING
Tonight's the launch for XCOM 2 while those really excited about this game can already begin pre-loading it on Steam. Are you interested in this successor to XCOM: Enemy Unknown?

As reported yesterday with the system requirements for XCOM 2, only the NVIDIA proprietary graphics are supported at launch for the Linux version of this game. The system requirements state, "AMD and Intel GPUs are not supported at the time of release."

This port was done by Feral Interactive and if it's like some of their past ports, while not officially supported, it may work with the Mesa/Gallium3D drivers at launch time if using the latest Git code or jumping through a few hoops. This strategy game is powered by Unreal Engine 3.

Unfortunately, I've already been told by Feral that the Linux version of the game doesn't have any benchmarking support (ugh!). But I intend to do some basic tests on the game with the different GPU/driver combinations just to see what works and what falls on its face. Eric Griffith meanwhile is looking forward to playing the game and will be writing his Linux game review here in the days ahead.

With this article though, I'm just trying to gauge the interest level you have in XCOM 2 for Linux. Are you excited for it? Have you already pre-ordered it? Just trying to decide whether I'll stay up past midnight today running the few manual tests with this game (and already having been working today since 5.00 AM) for a really quick turnaround in GPU/driver tests for Linux gamers if there is enough interest or whether I'll just wait until tomorrow morning. Let me know your thoughts about XCOM 2 for Linux by commenting on this article in our forums. Of course, priority in feedback is given to those that are Phoronix Premium members, particularly if you have any requests about specific GPU/drivers you'd like to see tested or other criteria in seeing how well the Linux graphics support is for this high profile game launch. Thanks!
