XDC2017 X.Org/Mesa/Wayland Conference To Be Hosted By Google
The X.Org Foundation Board of Directors held their annual in-face meeting today at XDC2016 in Helsinki, Finland. At this meeting they have decided to accept Google's invitation to host XDC2017 at the Googleplex.
Next September, Google will be hosting the X.Org Developers' Conference (XDC2017) in Mountain View, California. Though from the meeting summary it isn't clear if Google was the lone proposal for XDC2017 or there was any other competition; generally, it's seldom to have multiple requests for hosting the next year's XDC conference.
It is a bit interesting that Google has decided to host the event: it seems like in recent years, Google has been hosting less events at their campus... While years ago, there were many Linux/open-source events at the Googleplex from Linux Foundation events to KDE release parties to all sorts of other happenings while lately it's been reduced a lot. This year we've seen Google making Mesa EGL improvements, the founder of Wayland joining Google, and another former Intel Linux developer joining Google. Beyond Google using Wayland in the Android Runtime for Chrome, it will be interesting to see if Google has other Wayland/Mesa-related plans in the works to further justify their interest in hosting XDC2017... Could be interesting times ahead.
