GNOME 2.22 Schedule Available

While GNOME 2.20 is less than a month old, if you missed it, the GNOME 2.22 schedule is already available. This schedule, available from GNOME Live, places the first GNOME 2.22 development release later this month. The GNOME 2.20.1 maintenance release is scheduled for October 17, while on October 31 is the GNOME 2.21.1 development release. Succeeding this development release is the GNOME 2.21.2 release on November 10. Coming in December are two more development releases (GNOME 2.21.3 and GNOME 2.21.4).

MonoDevelop Reaches Beta

For those of you that may be after developing Microsoft C# and other .NET languages on Linux through the power of Novell's Mono, the first beta release of MonoDevelop 1.0 is now available for download. MonoDevelop is a GNOME IDE for these Redmond languages as well as C/C++ development support through g++ or GCC. MonoDevelop 1.0 Beta 1 also features a new database add-in, text editing improvements, ASP.NET features, change-log add-in, and plenty of other changes. GNOME 2.20.0 Released

GNOME 2.20 has been released. This release comes after months of hard work by the GNOME project but introduces improved language support, desktop search integration, new mail and calendar features through Evolution, efficient power management, and simplified system preferences are among the many changes. The GNOME Documentation Team has done a great job detailing all of the changes as well as screenshots in the GNOME 2.20 Release Notes.

GNOME 2.20.0 Package Deadline

This Wednesday will be the release of GNOME 2.20.0, and today is the tarball package due date for all packages wishing to make the release deadline. Many of the packages are already checked in and you can view the announcements on the gnome-announce-list. Look for the official GNOME 2.20 announcement this Wednesday.

GNOME 2.20.0 RC Due Tomorrow

With just two weeks left until GNOME 2.20.0 enters the world, the final development build is scheduled for release tomorrow. GNOME 2.19.92 is the GNOME 2.20.0 release candidate, which will contain a few fixes since the GNOME 2.20 Beta 2 release. Following the release of GNOME 2.19.92 is a GNOME 2.20.0 hard-code freeze on September 10 which lasts for one week, and then on September 19 will be the official release of GNOME 2.20.0! After that, we can start dreaming about the GNOME 2.22 release. The complete GNOME schedule is available from GNOME Live.

GNOME 2.20.0 Beta 2 Released

The second and final beta release for GNOME 2.20.0 is now available. The GNOME 2.19.91 development release will be short-live as planned for next week already is the GNOME 2.20.0 Release Candidate. GNOME 2.19.91 contains a lot of bug fixes, so try it out with GARNOME 2.19.91. The GNOME 2.20.2 Beta 2 release announcement can be read on the gnome-announce-list.

GNOME 2.20 Beta 1 Due Out Today

It was ten years ago today that the GNOME project was born when Miguel de Icaza had announced the creation of this free software desktop environment that ultimately would go head-to-head with KDE. Congratulations to the GNOME team with a very successful ten years! Marking the birthday of GNOME is also the first beta for GNOME 2.20.0 (GNOME 2.19.90). The beta announcement should be on the wire shortly along with the GARNOME 2.19.90 package. We are just over a month away from the release of GNOME 2.20.0!

GNOME 2.19.6 Released

Marking the release of GNOME 2.19.6, and another step towards the release of GNOME 2.20, is the availability of GARNOME 2.19.6. GNOME 2.19.6 is being released today, which will be followed by the release of GNOME 2.20.0 Beta 1 on August 15 and the second beta will be out on August 29. The final release of GNOME 2.20.0 will take place on Wednesday, September 19, 2007.

GNOME 2.18.3 & GNOME 2.19.4 Are Out

The last stable release in the GNOME 2.18 series is now out the door. Making up GNOME 2.18.3 are bug fixes, new translations, and updated documentation. The GNOME 2.18.3 announcement can be read at GNOME.org.

GNOME 2.19.4 Released

As the fourth development release in the road to GNOME 2.20, GNOME 2.19.4 is now available and offers a host of changes from the previous 2.19.3 release. Continuing in normal fashion, GARNOME 2.19.4 is also available to make for an easy build process of the latest GNOME source packages. GARNOME 2.19.4 has been dubbed the "Dancing to the Rhythm of the War Drums" release. The announcement can be found on the gnome-announce-list.

GNOME 2.19.3 Hits The Web

GNOME 2.19.3, the third developer release in the path to GNOME 2.20, is now available. GNOME 2.19.2 contains a number of updates beyond what was highlighted in our GNOME 2.19.2 desktop screenshots. GARNOME 2.19.3, dubbed the "leading the pack" release, is now available with the GNOME 2.19.3 packages along with a few updates since the freeze. The GARNOME announcement can be read on the gnome-announce-list. The next GNOME development release is due out on June 20, while the final release of GNOME 2.20 is scheduled for September 19, 2007.

What's Coming For GNOME 2.20/2.22?

We're still early in the GNOME 2.20 season with GNOME 2.19.2 just coming out earlier in the month, but the GNOME Live RoadMap for GNOME 2.20 and GNOME 2.22 has been updated. Some of the planned improvements for GNOME 2.20 will be version 3.0 of the Ekiga VoIP client, Evince improvements for document viewing, plug-in system for the GNOME image viewer (Eye of GNOME), a new highlighting engine for the text editor (Gedit), and full compliance with the FreeDesktop.org power management specification for GNOME Power Manager. Ekiga 3.0 will feature a new user interface, X-Video support, and support for audio and video codecs. On the table for GNOME 2.22 is New Stuff Manager integration, stabilization of Ekiga 3.0, complete support for X.509 certificates in GNOME Keyring, new library for GNOME Applets, a complete high contrast SVG theme for GNOME, and a lot more is planned.

GNOME 2.19.1 Available

Less than two months after the release of GNOME 2.18.0, version 2.19.1 is now available for those wishing to try out the latest unstable GNOME incarnation. The GNOME 2.19.1 press release hasn't yet the gnome-announce-list wire, but the GARNOME 2.19.1 source package was pushed out moments ago. More information on GNOME 2.19/2.20 is available here. The next GNOME release in the 2.19 series is GNOME 2.19.2, which is scheduled for release on May 16.

GNOME 2.19.1 Coming Soon

While it hasn't been long since the release of GNOME 2.18.1, let alone the release of GNOME 2.18.0, the path to GNOME 2.20 is already starting to heat-up. GNOME 2.19.1, an unstable release, has its tar-balls due today followed by the official release this Wednesday. This is the first of nine test releases in the GNOME 2.19 series before GNOME 2.20.0 will be introduced. GNOME 2.20.0 is scheduled for release on September 19. Coming from the GNOME side of the web next month is GNOME 2.19.2 along with the stable release of GNOME 2.18.2. More information on the GNOME 2.19 series is available from GNOME Live.

GNOME Mobile and Embedded Initiative

Yesterday Linux.com reported on the launching of the GNOME Mobile and Embedded Initiative. This initiative to get GNOME on mobile and embedded devices is sponsored by such companies as Red Hat and Canonical along with backing by the Linux Foundation. The GMAE (GNOME Mobile and Embedded) platform is a subset of the technologies found on a traditional GNOME desktop. This GMAE platform is already present in the Nokia N770 and N800 as well as the OLPC laptop, but in the coming months they will be adding Java ME, GeoClue, and making other improvements.

GNOME 2.18.1 Released

Yesterday was the release of Xfce 4.4.1 and today is the release of GNOME 2.18.1. Like yesterday's Xfce maintenance release, GNOME 2.18.1 adds new translations as well as bug fixes. The release announcement can be read on the gnome-announce-list.

GNOME 2.18.0 Released

Not only is today Pi day and the launch date for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, but GNOME 2.18.0 is also being released today! GNOME 2.18.0 boasts a horde of improvements over GNOME 2.16. Among the changes are improved support for a number of things, new customizable options, GNOME desktop sharing, GNOME audio controller improvements, Sudoku and Chess games, network GNOME games support (for selected titles), improved bug reporting, and much more. GNOME 2.18.0 Release Candidate

GNOME 2.17.92, the release candidate for GNOME 2.18.0, is now available from official mirrors! All features have been added, major bugs fixed, and more for this release. The hard code freeze will occur next week while the official GNOME 2.18.0 release will be out on March 14. The release announcement is available on the gnome-announce-list.

GNOME 2.18.0 Beta 2

Today is the package check-in for the second Beta in the path to GNOME 2.18.0. GNOME 2.18.0 Beta 2 (2.17.91) will see its release this Wednesday -- February 14 -- which is one month to the day for the release of GNOME 2.18. At the end of February will be the first and only release candidate in the GNOME 2.17/2.18 series. This week's release of GNOME 2.17.91 also marks the start of the string freeze for GNOME 2.18.0.

GNOME 2.16.3 Released

The third maintenance release in the GNOME 2.16 branch has now been officially released. New in GNOME 2.16.3 are bug fixes along with updated translations. This release also marks the last point release in the GNOME 2.16 branch, as GNOME 2.18.0 will be here in early March. Download links and more information is available at GNOME.

GNOME 2.17.90 Released

GNOME 2.17.5 Is Out

The fifth development release for GNOME 2.17/2.18 is now out! GNOME 2.17.5 marks the start of the API/ABI freeze in the path to GNOME 2.18.0, which will be released in early March. The GNOME 2.17.5 desktop changes can be read here, while here is the mailing-list announcement. GARNOME has also been updated to assist in your compilation process of GNOME 2.17.5.

GNOME 2.17.5 This Week

Tomorrow is the official check-in for packages that wish to make the GNOME 2.17.5 deadline. This will be the fifth of eight GNOME 2.17 releases in the road to GNOME 2.18.0. GNOME 2.17.5 is anticipated for release on Wednesday, January 10, while GNOME 2.18.0 is scheduled for release on Pi day -- March 14, 2007. GNOME Future Plans

Christian Schaller has posted on his blog some information about GNOME plans for the future. This blog post came as a result of an OSNews article earlier this month, which can be discussed here. This blog post basically weighs on the incremental improvements as being the status quo for Linux as well as Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows Vista. GNOME will stay at version 2 until a future release brings major changes.

GNOME 2.17.4 - Coming Soon

The tarball package check-in for the GNOME 2.17.4 release is tomorrow while the release is coming up on Wednesday (December 20, 2006). This also marks the string change and user interface announcement period. The discussion of module inclusions also heats up at this time in the road to GNOME 2.18. Following the release of GNOME 2.17.4 is GNOME 2.17.5 and 2.17.90 (GNOME 2.18.0 Beta 1) in January, GNOME 2.18 Beta 2 and RC in February, and the final release of GNOME 2.18.0 in early March. Screenshots of GNOME 2.17.4 will be provided on Phoronix later this week. Ending off the GNOME 2.16 series is the third maintenance release at the end of January.

GNOME 2.17.3 Check-In

Today the tarballs are due for packages wishing to make the GNOME 2.17.3 release date. GNOME 2.17.3 should be released on Wednesday (December 6). GNOME 2.17.4 will be shipping later this month as well with the check-in on December 18 and release on December 20. GNOME 2.16.2 Released

The second maintenance release in the GNOME 2.16 series has been released on the eve of Thanksgiving here in the United States. New in GNOME 2.16.2 is bug fixes, updated translations, and updated documentation. Meanwhile the GNOME 2.17/2.18 development cycle is going strong. Mono 1.2 Released

Coming out of the Novell camp yesterday was the 1.2 release of Mono. New in Mono 1.2 is support for Windows Forms, system drawing, C# compiler, runtime environments for Visual Basic .NET, Java, and JavaScript. There are many more changes, and all of the details can be found in the release notes. The download page is also updated.

GNOME 2.17.1 Released

The new GNOME 2.18 development cycle is now underway with the release of GNOME 2.17.1. While GNOME 2.16 shaped up to be a fantastic release, GNOME 2.18 will hopefully end up even better. GNOME 2.17.1 is the first development release in this road to GNOME 2.18.0, which is scheduled for release on March 14, 2007. Unfortunately, at the time of writing GARNOME 2.17.1 or GARNOME daily is not available -- though we anticipate that it will be released soon. GNOME 2.17.1 Check-in

Today, on the eve of the official Fedora Core 6 launch, is the due date for all GNOME projects wanting to submit their Tarballs for the 2.17.1 launch. GNOME 2.17.1 is scheduled for release this Wednesday, October 18, 2006. As always, the odd numbered release cycles signify the development branch, which this time is the road leading up to GNOME 2.18.0. The tentative GNOME 2.17/2.18 schedule can be found at GNOME Live. Later this week we will be providing screenshots of the first GNOME 2.17 release.

GNOME 2.16.1 Released

GNOME 2.16.1, the first stable update in the GNOME 2.16 series, is being released today. Updated source packages are available from the GNOME FTP server. The GNOME 2.17/2.18 release schedule can be found here. At the time of writing the 2.16.1 release announcement has yet to hit the announce-list.

GNOME 2.17/2.18 Release Cycle

Coming out a day after the release of GNOME 2.16.0 is the development time-line for GNOME 2.18.0. As it looks right now, GNOME 2.17.1 is scheduled to be released on October 18, followed by additional development builds, while the GNOME 2.18.0 Beta 1 (2.17.90) would be released on January 24 of next year. SpreadGNOME.org Launches

SpreadGNOME.org has today launched as the latest site in the chain of Phoronix Networks sites. In an effort to promote the adoption of GNU/Linux desktops, SpreadGNOME.org has launched with the goal of being a resource to help spread the word of GNOME to GNU/Linux desktop users and potential converts. GNOME 2.16.0 Beta 1

GNOME 2.15.90 (GNOME 2.16.0 Beta 1) packages are now available. With the first Beta release of GNOME 2.16, it also marks the freeze for the API/ABI, feature and modules, and user interface. GARNOME is once again available for building GNOME 2.15.90. GNOME 2.15.91 (2.16.0 Beta 2) is tentatively scheduled for release on August 9, while the release candidate will make its premiere on August 23. Check out more at GNOME.

GNOME 2.15.4

Coming a bit later than initially anticipated is GNOME 2.15.4. This latest GNOME release is the fourth development release for the upcoming GNOME 2.16.0, which is presently scheduled for a September 6th release. One of the big changes mentioned in the GNOME announcement list is with gnome-vfs. GARNOME is available at this time for GNOME 2.15.4. More is at GNOME.

Mono 1.1.16 Released

Mono 1.1.16, the third release in the series toward version 1.2, has been released. Some of the highlights in Mono v1.1.16 include stock support for IronPython 1.0 Beta 8, Windows.Forms bug-fixing, in-line optimization enabled by default, ASP .NET 2.0 updates, C# compiler bug fixes, and more. GNOME 2.15.3 Due

Today is the check-in for the GNOME 2.15.3 unstable packages, in anticipation of the third GNOME 2.15 development release, which is scheduled for release on Wednesday (June 14, 2006). Similarly, with the release of GNOME 2.15.3 it will mark the development freeze for Fedora Core 6 Test 1 (FC6T1), which will then be released on June 21. The tarballs available so far for GNOME 2.15.3 include: gnome-games 2.15.3, Orca 0.2.5, GnomePythonDesktop 2.15.3, GnomePython 2.15.2, Gossip 0.11.2, GNOME Power Manager 2.15.3, gedit-plugins 2.15.3, and Eye of GNOME 2.15.3. After compiling the latest development packages this Wednesday, we will likely deliver new screenshots for those that have yet to take the unstable voyage. GNOME 2.14.2 Released

The next point release in the stable GNOME 2.14 series has come out this afternoon. Lots of bug fixing, new translations, and all the updated documentation. More on this is at GNOME. GNOME 2.16 is due out this September, after a series of GNOME 2.15 development builds during the summer.

As we had provided a plethora of coverage after building GNOME 2.15.1 using GARNOME, today we simply took some screenshots using GNOME 2.15.2 packages that have been integrated thus far with Fedora Rawhide. GNOME 2.15.2 Released

In the road towards GNOME 2.16.0, the second development release for the GNOME 2.15 series has been released. GNOME 2.15.2 contains many enhancements beyond the earlier 2.15.1 build. As shared in earlier Phoronix news posts, there are many package improvements to note. To demonstrate some of these improvements, we are in the process of once again building GNOME 2.15.2 using GARNOME, and should have some screenshots up shortly. GNOME 2.15.2 Updates

Coming out of the GNOME camp today are quite a few project updates -- primarily focused at the GNOME v2.15 development cycle. The list thus far as of the afternoon on May 15 includes the following. Alacarte 0.9.1, gnome-mag-0.12.5, GDM2 2.15.3, gedit-plugins 2.15.2, gedit 2.15.2, gnome-build 0.1.3, gdl 0.6.1, GLib 2.11.1, orca-0.2.4, GNOME Power Manager 2.15.2, gcalctool v5.8.13, and gnome-games 2.15.2. The tarballs for GNOME v2.15.2 are due today, and the release of GNOME 2.15.2 unstable will occur on Wednesday, May 17. GNOME v2.14.2 stable is scheduled to take place on May 31, 2006.

Hearts for GNOME

No, this is not a new support group or project for GNOME lovers and fanatics, but it is the creation of the Hearts project for GNOME. This is a implementation of the classic card game for the GNOME desktop, and it will feature configurable rule-sets and editable computer opponents. No official release is available, but the Subversion repository is available. The creation and modification of opponents is done through the Lua scripting language. GNOME 2.15.1 Released

While GNOME 2.15.x unstable packages have been sprouting all week, the official release of GNOME 2.15.1 has just come down the wire. As with past GNOME releases, the odd branch signifies the development cycle, while GNOME 2.16 will be the stable release. Planned for the upcoming GNOME development are lots of new changes, features, bug fixes, and translations. Many new modules and guidelines are planned in time for GNOME 2.16. GNOME 2.16.0 is planned for a release in September of 2006. It is important to remember GNOME 2.15 may be unstable and cause problems, so try at your own risk. GDM2 2.14.3 / Power Manager

Yesterday, GNOME v2.15 development broke into full swing with some of the projects presenting unstable packages so far being: Gnome-utils 2.15.0 (Growing Family), GnomePython 2.15.1, GnomePythonDesktop 2.15.1, Yelp 2.15.1, and gnome-games 2.15.1. However, out today from the GNOME camp GNOME Power Manager and GNOME Display Manager 2 (GDM2). GNOME Power Manager 2.14.2 is primarily a stable bug-fix release with similar changes to what was presented for GNOME Power Manager 2.15.1, while not quite as lengthy. GNOME Display Manager 2.14.3 on the other hand implements fixes for four known issues. GDM2 2.14.3 has been dubbed the "SuperNovaBlast" release.

GNOME Power Manager 2.15.1

If GNOME Power Manager 2.14 doesn't suit your needs or you are looking for the latest packages, GNOME Power Manager 2.15.1 was just released. GNOME Power Manager 2.15.1 incorporates a number of changes in the release from general features, power management, power preferences, power information, and translations. Some of the notable items in this release are the icons switching to using the Tango style, new throttle API for gnome-screensaver, appropriate response when systray crashes, monitors more gconf keys, checks to ensure lower brightness when idling, and the new information page showing a simpler view of hardware. More on GNOME Power Manager 2.15.1, and this project in general, is available at the site. With the start of the GNOME 2.15 development cycle, additional projects have begun to announce new unstable packages such as Gnome-utils 2.15.0 (Growing Family), GnomePython 2.15.1, GnomePythonDesktop 2.15.1, vte-0.13.0, and Pango-1.13.0.
