As the first part of an upcoming series of tests benchmarking the latest open-source and closed-source Linux graphics drivers for AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce hardware, here's some benchmark results for several recent Radeon GPUs when tested on the current Git version of the Linux 3.16 kernel and a recent Mesa 10.3-devel snapshot.

The graphics cards tested in this article included:

- Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 1GB
- Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 1GB
- Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB
- ASUS Radeon HD 7850 1GB
- XFX Radeon HD 7950 3GB
- Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 2GB
- Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X 2GB

The graphics cards were limited to the recent Radeon HD 6000 series and newer hardware within my possession, sans the Radeon R9 290 where the open-source AMD Hawaii support is still broken.

Coming up in Phoronix articles in the next few days include new benchmarks of the NVIDIA GPUs on Nouveau with Linux 3.16 followed next week by the respective proprietary driver benchmarks. There's also new power consumption, performance-per-Watt, and thermal data to publish. There will also likely be some new Source Engine / Valve Linux gaming benchmarks too. If you have any test requests let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+. Radeon Linux 3.16 Mesa 10.3 Git

All of these AMD Radeon GPUs were tested on the Intel Core i7 4790K Devil's Canyon system while running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the Linux 3.16 Git kernel and the Oibaf PPA to provide the xf86-video-ati 7.4.909 DDX and Mesa 10.3-devel git-9548ba6 user-space OpenGL driver for R600g and RadeonSI. All of these Linux OpenGL benchmarks were carried out in a fully automated and reproducible manner using the Phoronix Test Suite.
