Fedora Workstation 22 Is Looking Great, Running Fantastic

Fedora 22 is now under its final freeze with planned availability before month's end. I've been running Fedora 22 on various development systems and in the benchmarking farm at Phoronix to great success.

As the Fedora 22 release approaches, there will be more benchmarks coming along with other tests (e.g. the latest X11 vs. Wayland, Fedora 22 graphics performance, etc). For today's article I just wanted to make a few remarks about Fedora Workstation 22. Fedora Workstation 22 feels like a nice evolutionary upgrade over Fedora 21. GNOME 3.16 and these upstream improvements represent a bulk of the user-visible changes in Fedora 22. Below the hood there's the GCC 5.0 compiler, Mesa 10.5, Perl 5.20, Linux 4.0, and many other package updates. If GNOME isn't your thing, Xfce 4.12 is present along with the premiere of the LXQt desktop environment. The latest KDE Plasma 5 / Frameworks 5 packages are also present in Fedora 22. Many of the other Fedora 22 workstation/desktop changes have already been detailed in numerous Phoronix articles.

Other nice changes with Fedora 22 include switching from Yum to DNF for package management by default, the GDM log-in screen by default using a Wayland-based session where supported, etc. For Fedora 22 server users, XFS has become the default file-system, a Fedora database server role was added that's powered by PostgreSQL, and Fedora Atomic Host is a new variant with F22.

Overall I'm quite happy with how Fedora 22 has turned out and the icing on the cake is that the F22 release cycle so far hasn't dragged out nearly as bad as some of the earlier, notorious Fedora release days. Stay tuned for more Fedora 22 tests on Phoronix in the days and weeks ahead. Kudos to all involved in making Fedora 22 a reality and an excellent successor to the wonderful Fedora 21, which I'm currently running on my main production system but look forward to the F22 upgrade.
