7-Way Linux Distribution Benchmarks To Kick Off September

In testing out a new Broadwell-EP system as well as for final validation of the new Phoronix Test Suite 6.6, I carried out a fresh Linux OS distribution comparison last week. Here are those results from Ubuntu, Clear Linux, Scientific Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Fedora, Antergos, and Sabayon Linux.

The same Intel Xeon E5-2609 v4 Broadwell-EP system with MSI X99A WORKSTATION motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 system memory, dual OCZ TRION 120GB SATA 3.0 SSDs, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X graphics card was used for this Linux distribution comparison. The new X99A WORKSTATION motherboard was kindly sent over by MSI and has been working out great with all my Linux testing, including the seven different distributions tested in this comparison.

Tested cleanly out-of-the-box on this system was Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, Clear Linux 10040, Scientific Linux 7.2, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed 20160826, Fedora 24, Antergos 16.7-Rolling, and Sabayon Linux 16.07.

It's a fun little comparison for those curious about the stock performance of all these modern Linux distributions. In the days ahead I'll add in some numbers with the various recent BSD operating system updates.

All of the Linux benchmarks were conducted in a fully-automated and reproducible manner using the open-source Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software.
