Last month when Ubuntu 16.10 was released I ran some desktop gaming benchmarks with Intel Skylake graphics under Unity, GNOME, Xfce, LXDE, KDE, Openbox, and MATE. Following that article a few Phoronix Premium readers requested similar tests be done under the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver stack, so here are those numbers.

For Friday benchmarking fun, here are numbers from Budgie, GNOME Shell, KDE Plasma 5, LXDE, MATE, Unity 7, and Xfce. All packages were obtained from the Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak repository. With the test requests coming in from premium supporters, tests on KDE Plasma 5 were done with the out-of-the-box settings (compositing enabled) and then again when disabled via Alt + Shift + F12.

Ubuntu 16.10 Desktops RadeonSI

This RadeonSI Ubuntu 16.10 desktop comparison was done with a Radeon R9 Fury graphics card and the graphics driver stack consisted of the Linux 4.9 Git kernel and Mesa 13.1-devel Git as of this week from the Padoka PPA built against LLVM 4.0 SVN. These results aren't as interesting as the Intel desktop comparison numbers, but nevertheless the results are on the following pages. All of these OpenGL Linux game tests were carried out using the open-source Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software.
