Phoronix: WattMan Support Coming For Radeon Polaris GPUs On Linux

Back in 2016 AMD introduced WattMan to their Radeon Software driver to allow for fine-tuning of GPU voltage, engine clocks, memory clocks and more. An incarnation of that is now approaching their open-source Linux driver...

Without a GUI, it's not exactly user-friendly for someone frequently changing their WattMan settings
Who needs a Wattman GUI for this Here in Openbox within minute i would just fire up obmenu and add these commands to right click menu

Or elsewhere it is easy to write plugins for some panels i guess, so people can have this there easy on clickete on some picture click

Or whatever else is userfriendly nowdays i have no idea maybe some VR VK glowing menu

So glad seeing AMD's GPUs get full featured on Linux.

Overclockers. And people who just want to calmly customize the product. Bypassing Linux features

Manual controls should be working at this stage it appears for Sea Islands and Volcanic Islands GPUs on AMDGPU DRM.
But these families (GCN 1.0) do not support WattMan (in Windows)!
Or did AMD still decide to make support for the old cards?

These are not SI familes, that is CI and VI.

SI (GCN 1.0) is Southern Islands
CI (GCN 1.1) is Sea Islands
VI (GCN 1.2) is Volcanic Islands

There are other names for these like - first, second and third GCN generations or even GFXIP 6/7/8 if you like (to not mention some points of these as we would be better to talk near per asic) Polaris is 4th gen, Vega is 5th gen and so on.

Michael seems like to put these click bait articles, when someone says Radeon™ WattMan users think of GUI of it - but this isn't that

Or did AMD still decide to make support for the old cards?
Simply said - what is possible to be enabled they enable.

Maybe people here only read articles, but not patches i dunno

But this is Tonga as that is VI... should work on CI also it seems (these are Hawaii and Bonaire cards)

            https://lists.freedesktop.org/archiv...ry/018841.html

Basically on any card which is up to 5 year old, but is not GCN 1.0

              R* 200 Series - SeaI/VI?
AFAIK WattMan doesn't work on this series.. GCN 2nd Generation (Sea Islands)

These series were never per generations:

HD7xxx and HD8xxx series were mixage of VLIW5, GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1
                R* 200 serie is mixage of VLIW5, GCN 1.0, GCN 1.1 and GCN 1.2
                R* 300 serie were mixage of GCN 1.0, GCN 1.1, GCN 1.2

Simply said, only Bonaire and Hawaii and their variants/revisions are GCN 1.1 else is GCN 1.0, with exception of Tonga and its revisions which is GCN 1.2. and Fury that is also VI but with PI point .

AFAIK WattMan doesn't work on this series.. GCN 2nd Generation (Sea Islands)

It should work, just read patches there... it won't on Sea Islands APUs but on Sea Islands cards it should i think.

It works on CI and VI, just don't work same way internally as on AI (Polaris).

It'd be interesting to see if I could lower the base voltages a bit on this here WX 7100, while I wait for an opportunity to buy Vega.

I know for a fact that I can reduce the voltage of my Polaris by 0.23V in all power profiles, saving up quite a few watts and thus reducing the racket my reference RX480 emits.
