Number of lines of code decreased by some 30% in last decade, it's slightly growing lately but few years back they removed a shitton of old cruft.

Maybe they will also work on input separation and some other security features. Since DRI 3 I don't see much point in Wayland.

Wayland was started because those alterations will require breaking how X11 protocol works completely. It in the X11 design to snoop on other applications input and other applications screen output.

Wayland is kind of a necessary evil. Its also that the graphic stack of Linux still has not been completely sorted out. Nvidia still has not managed to get a universal buffer system up.

Big part of Wayland delay is the fact the complete graphic stack of Linux has not been mature. One of the reasons why Android forked the graphics drivers was that the old system was way to power hungry. People complain about Linux not being power effective on laptops some of this is the way x11 is doing things. X11 design means it does not use modern hardware effectively and the protocol has written in parts that suits hardware we no longer use and modern graphics hardware is nothing like it.

I meant, not mature enough, regarding end-user's functionalities. There are things, which aren't available on wayland, yet.

And you have the mirror as well that there are things you can do in wayland that there is no way in hell to-do using X11. So the reality is X11 is not fully mature and never can be. Wayland is taking serous time and filling out the x11 protocol also took serous time.

It's great for "smart" fridges and stuff. That's why Samsung is interested in it.
