Phoronix: Windows 10 WSL vs. Linux Performance For Early 2018

Back in December was our most recent round of Windows Subsystem for Linux benchmarking with Windows 10 while since then both Linux and Windows have received new stable updates, most notably for mitigating the Spectre and Meltdown CPU vulnerabilities. For your viewing pleasure today are some fresh benchmarks looking at the Windows 10 WSL performance against Linux using the latest updates as of this week while also running some comparison tests too against Docker on Windows and Oracle VM VirtualBox.

Someone give Clear Linux a cookie! Impressive performance.

How Ubuntu makes the prowess of being beat by Ubuntu on WSL in so many tests?
Clear linux + docker seems to be a interesting option.

English is not my native language and I don't wanna teach anything to anyone, but I believe this feature should be called LSW (Linux Subsystem for Windows) instead...
That said I'm still waiting for Archlinux on WSL.

I believe the intent is for it to mean the subsystem of windows for running linux

Offhand I believe this is because Ubuntu 16.04 is using an old kernel, whereas Windows has all updated software. Hence Ubuntu 16.04 probably only have the slow non-optimized mitigations (i.e. for Spectre/Meltdown), because optimizations with regard to them is a "feature" and won't get backported; whereas Windows not gonna wait for Win11 for such optimizations.

FWIW this is not specific to Spectre-related optimizations, lots of other optimizations also happens every kernel cycle; and I believe something alike should be happening on Windows side too.

Why were results from several systems missing in some tests? Clean Linux for Dolphin for instance?

Yes, Ubuntu uses a kernel without PCID for example.
