But finally X.Org Server 1.20 is now being prepared for release and it incorporates all the major work since the X.Org Server 1.19 debut in November 2016. Needless to say, xorg-server 1.20 is going to be a huge release...

Aren't VR applications running in a "fullscreen" X window on the host system's main display? Shouldn't this be enough to allow reliable unredirecting of the compositor?
Subjectively without VR, I wouldn't say that Xorg adds additional input latency without a compositor, so is RandR leasing really mostly about "edge cases"?

Happy to see the tablet support, I've got that bug with two cursors on XWayland.

Gutted to the capitulation to Nvidia regarding EGL streams. That pull request should be purged with fire.

It is hurting though. Xorg supporting it gives Nvidia more ammunition to press ahead with their insane policy. If everyone in the FOSS community rejects their crap like the KDE devs are doing (good on them), then Nvidia would have to fall in line and support GBM. But when the likes of Xorg and Gnome cave, then everyone is stuck supporting two technologies when it would be much better having everyone get behind one.

Why it would have to "fall in line"..? What would make them? Considering the minuscule market share percentage FOSS desktop has. Nvidia could tell "fuck you" and proceed accordingly.. Reverse engineer your own driver or be without one if you do not like theirs.

For a people preaching software freedom, such "fall in line" statements and attitudes are straight out from some autocratic government's playbook.

The only insane ones are the fanboys/girls who act like GBM is perfect for all users/uses. It would be nice if things were that simple because then we could just say "F Nvidia!" and post pictures of Linus's middle finger and feel all good and righteous. Unfortunately, things aren't that simple.

You think so? Linux desktop users are minority. Nvidia earns money on professional users. They don't need Wayland or GBM - desktop users need it. So I don't think Nvidia would listen desktop users.

To be fair - GBM is Mesa solution and Nvidia doesn't use Mesa. It's free software, so You can't force everybody to use Mesa. EGL in Xwayland isn't for Nvidia. It's for users. Thanks to this option more users can use Xwayland. Is this bad?
