    Back in May AMD posted initial open-source "Vega 20" patches and support for that yet-to-launch graphics processor was subsequently merged for the Linux 4.18 kernel. More of the Vega 20 AMDGPU kernel driver enablement has now been posted...

    In my cursory digging through these patches, no major secrets were revealed for this GPU we've been awaiting to launch.

          AMD will in Dresden offenbar eine Forschungsgruppe einrichten, die nicht nur Linux auf die eigenen Prozessoren optimieren, sondern auch die Anforderungen des freien Betriebssystems in die Entwicklung kommender Prozessorgenerationen einbringen soll.
          In Dresden möchte AMD offenbar an der Linux-Unterstützung für seine x86_64-Prozessoren feilen – und künftige Prozessorgenerationen auf den Betrieb unter Linux und Xen optimieren.

          AMD will in Dresden ein weltweites Kompetenzzentrum für Betriebssysteme einrichten. Im Operating System Research Center (OSRC) soll ein Team unter der Leitung von Chris Schläger in Kooperation mit AMDs Prozessordesignern daran arbeiten, "zukünftige Generationen von AMD-Mikroprozessoren hinsichtlich der Anforderungen moderner Betriebssysteme zu optimieren".
          Das neu gegründete Operating System Research Center (OSRC) in Dresden soll AMDs weltweites Kompetenzentrum in Sachen Betriebssysteme werden und bei der Optimierung kommender AMD-Prozessoren für Linux helfen.

            Humm, now even the GPUs have that rather pesky PSP / ARM Trust Zone thing.
            Not convinced this is a good idea.
            Stop TCPA, stupid software patents and corrupt politicians!

              Welcome to IP Serfdom. Since knowledge is power, there is a lot of power out there designed to keep the knowledge away from you, the consumer.

              Microcomputers were supposed to be a huge change from the mainframe + dummy terminal model of computing. They were supposed to put power in the hands of individuals, "the rest of us" to quote Apple's 1984 marketing. Computing, though, has been steadily regressing right back to the centralized model. The cloud. Rental rather than ownership. Etc.

                GPUs run their own firmware on their own microcontrollers already. I'd say adding a layer of "security" with a PSP does not change much either way.

                  Easy there citing the Beast. Apple's marketing material gave us "pearls of wisdom", like the late "what is a computer" statement by a girl using an Apple tablet.

                  The reason why they (Apple and anyone else making standalone computers) sought to "put power in the hands of the individuals" is because that was the only way they could sell computers at a time where networking was not a thing at all. They simply could not do otherwise.

                  As networking becomes more common and more pervasive a ton of things are moved back to the old model, and we now get great things like IaaS, PaaS and SaaS (infrastructure, platform and software as a service respectively), which are basically going back to the old terminals+mainframe model.

                    oranges = The idea that microcomputers were made to be used by the user, not to let someone else use that person
