    Alternate Mode can be enabled only via a USB PD protocol handshake through structured vendor-defined messages (VDM) to discover, configure, and to enter or exit Alt Modes.

    For anyone interested in how USB negotiates alt-modes, specifically Display Port, see this white paper from ST Micro. It gives a good idea of just what is involved in getting alt-modes to work correctly on any stack, let alone Linux.

        Writing USB protocol drivers from scratch is sadly really painful.
