Phoronix: An Update On The Radeon RX 590 For Linux

Last week AMD released the Radeon RX 590 Polaris refresh graphics card, but after buying this ~$279 USD graphics card, sadly it's not yet out-of-the-box on Linux for driver support. I am still working on getting it working with the open-source driver stack but have a brief update to share...

Thanks for the update. Was just trying to figure out the current state myself.

Thanks for trying this. This GPU should deliver really really good results with RadeonSI - It's a pity that there is no support for it since release date. Not only for potential customers but for AMD as well.
They should improve this - Raven Ridge and Polaris 30 are no positive examples regarding day one support and it was much better in the years before.

Sad that it's not day-one Linux support, but hey, at least with AMD it's not going to be ages.

Why did they not try to put it all upstream before the release? Lack of resources or some unexpected blockers?

It's an overclocked RX 480/580, nothing special.

yeah, wondering about that, too. With raven ridge, there might be some quirks, but the 590 is supposed to be a normal polaris 10/20 card?

First of all, the GPU is made in an improved process which allows running higher clock speeds consuming less energy. Secondly you can expect a one by one scaling when you increase GPU and memory clocks so this is really good scaling compared with Vega56 or GTX 1070.
And lastly, as far as I can see, Michael usually tests the reference cards. Testing this card could lead to interesting results between Vega56 and RX 590 since Vega is not performing as good as possible on Linux yet and an RX 580 seems to be even close to a GTX 1070 on Linux. There is not a huge step between RX 580 and RX Vega and it will even be smaller with the RX 590.

But look at the power consumption (i know its useless, because if its important you don't buy amd grafik cards). They skyrocket with the higher clocks. Its just an old gpu with new Settings. yea probably they use a tweaked process, but noting special.

Neither... we had originally been told that no driver or FW changes would be required for RX 590.

A few weeks ago Alex noticed that the Windows driver devs had added code for a new SMC firmware revision, so he pushed a corresponding change out to amd-gfx and queued it for upstream. We weren't expecting the new FW to be a must-have change, just an optimization, but when Michael started seeing problems Alex pointed him to the patch and FW in case running with older FW was the cause. Doesn't look to be the case at the moment.

The SMC FW change was not included in the package that we ran through SW QA successfully on RX 590 engineering samples.

We should have more test results in the morning from both SW QA and Markham devs.
