I wonder if Adreno is still similar to VLIW based Radeons in terms of drivers and programming. Or has the architecture moved significantly away from it's roots?

a2xx was in some ways rather similar to r600, except that instead of groups of 5 scalar instructions with constraints on src registers, it had vec4 + scalar encoded in a single instruction (packet).

With a3xx they switched over to a new scalar ISA which was completely different.. think of it as superscalar without register renaming or OoO or any of the tricks that modern CPU designs use to make it appear that instructions are executing sequentually, so all that work falls to the compiler.
