    Phoronix: Initial Benchmarks Of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 On An Intel Xeon Cascade Lake Server

    Since yesterday's release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.0 we have been busy firing up benchmarks of RHEL8 on multiple workstations and servers. Over the next week or two will be some interesting benchmark results on multiple systems compared to multiple operating systems while for some preliminary RHEL8 performance data are benchmarks of the new Red Hat Linux distribution from the dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8280 "Cascade Lake" Gigabyte server compared to CentOS 7.6 (RHEL 7.6), Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu 19.04, Fedora Server 29, Fedora Server 30, openSUSE Leap 15, and Clear Linux 29250.

    Thanks for the tests!

    A couple questions:
    • why don't you use 100 as a base value on the geometric mean (either for the slower system or the highlighted one, RHEL 8.0 in this case)? It's not clear what that number represents;
    • would love to see a review of RHV 4.2/4.3 (currently in beta), maybe against vSphere. This would attract lot of professional users.

      Michael Can you run some benchmarks on Talos/Blackbird (if you have access to early Blackbirds)? Apparently RHEL8 supports POWER9: https://www.talospace.com/2019/05/re...-linux-80.html

        No Blackbird access yet, only Talos II.

          RHV does supports POWER9 as a host but only PPC guest OS'es.

            Not really usable on a Workstation where latency & fast reaction times are needed, since RHEL doesn't have Kernel preemption (PREEMPT) enabled. (Just like Fedora...)

              Summary, except for CentOS7, the results are roughly RH8 +/- 4.5%, so rock what you like!

              CentOS is missing from PyBench.

                Because the latest one depended upon Python 3 not satisfied by CentoS 7 stock.
